The label grew out of the Putumayo clothing company, founded by Dan Storper in 1975 and sold in 1997. Co-founder Michael Kraus joined Storper to help launch Putumayo World Music. In the past eighteen years, the record label has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music characterized by the company’s motto: “guaranteed to make you feel good!”

We want to thank the wonderful volunteers for that day: Geri Melnick, Susan Berkowitz-Schwartz & Elliott Schwartz, Sharon & Mel Klein, Fern Revzin, Leila St Jean & her crew, Lori Bendell, Sandi Franciosa, Arlene Dwoskin and Michelle McGrath. Thank you also to Evelyn Ballin of the Heart Painter Studio. NEW BUSINESS & COMMITTEES: A) PERFORMANCE COMMITTEE: Chairperson, Stephanie Soplop reported emailing everyone on the list and getting a few confirmations. People were pleased that the very popular Japanese Drummers will perform again this year. A listing of the performance times will appear in the printed program at the festival they will also be sent out to our participants before the event. Stephanie will continue contacting both new and past performers. B) VOLUNTEERS COMMITTEE: Chairperson, Lori Bendell, reported completing a form from FAU for student volunteers and hasn’t gotten an Atlantic High School form. She sent emails to the list and hasn’t heard back from many people as yet. People felt some volunteers can’t commit three months in advance. People at the meeting made a commitment to volunteer. Lori offered her home for the Volunteer Meeting the week before the festival on Sat. March 24. The County Library only allows an organization one meeting per month. In the past we have had a meeting each week in March prior to the festival. Thus, we will need one more location for the March meeting. SOME EXAMPLES OF VOLUNTEER JOBS for Sat. March 31 ; ( shifts are available): Parking Attendants w/ Cell Phones, Performance Table Attendants, Booth Table Attendants, Volunteer Table Attendants, Raffle Sellers, Exit Survey Takers, Clean-Up throughout the day, Artistic Helpers for a few Booths and the 9:30 to11:00am Workshop, Drink Sales etc. Fri March 30 we need several people to put up Decorations and place booth numbers. Lori will get a floor plan of the school so Susan can make a chart. Stephanie asked that the Performance Table be near the Sound System Set-up for easy access with CD’s. DISCUSSIONS FOR FUTURE MEETING: 1) Counting participants- Possible wrist bands or a counter 2) Raffle Ticket issues- 1 free ticket to all or free to children or no free tickets only sales? Susan was concerned that kids attending may not be able to afford $1. C) FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE: We need a chairperson. 1) We are asking people to get local businesses to become a sponsor or donate a raffle prize. Sponsorship Packets were distributed to attendees and are available from Susan. 2) A Silent Auction was discussed and Lori will try to find a volunteer to run it at a table. 3) Elliott suggested a 50/50 Raffle D) ART CONTEST COMMITTEE: Chairperson Al Fisher will contact Josh Kennedy and they will report their findings to Susan. Ideas discussed and accepted for the new contest at the Nov. 12 meeting were: Subject- " HOW TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE" was considered. Forms for the contest were discussed 1- drawing 2-skit 3-collage of pictures 4- internet 5- songs 6- poems. Al questioned if it should be limited to children or adults or both. E) BOOTH COMMITTEE: Chairperson Judy Keiser took up the issue of Merchandise Vendors donating a prize for the Raffle since their fee of $25 for a booth is very low. It was pointed out that this would be good advertising for them on the stage which is separated from the booths this year. It was decided that a minimum donation of merchandise valued at $25 or more would be requested. Food Vendors who pay the fee of $50 would be asked to reduce their per item food instead of raising their fee. We want to make the food available for as many socioeconomic groups attending as possible. Judy will draft an email and be assisted by Jazmin Marmol in contacting Booth participants. She is requesting more helpers to call Booth people. We need more ethnic based food vendors. Dorothy had a suggestion of a possible vendor and exchanged info with Judy. The James Thomas’ Bloodmobile should be cleared to park in the lot as long as it doesn’t block traffic since the school had one there recently. The issue of Food Trucks will be taken up at another meeting. Dorothy Lowery from the “100 Black Women” national organization met us at the We Can Burn Fair and wants to coordinate with us for their Health Fair issues by possibly having three Booths for HIV, Sickle Cell and Diabetes. She understands that they should be interactive booths and it’s also possible that they will rent some school rooms to do private testing. Dorothy asked about advertising and was referred to the packet prices. Dorothy will have the president of her organization contact Susan for further discussions. H) DECORATIONS COMMITTEE: Chairperson –Susan will have a life size Israeli figure made to add to the other cultures. She is in contact with Temple Sinai to see if their Sunday school would like to participate. This figure was requested at the last festival. The Gandhi Peace poem was performed by all.
